COURSE DESCRIPTION:
|
This course focuses on building and sustaining a culture of safety in skin and wound care for individual patients, caregivers, the health care system and others involved in wound care. Content includes the prevention and treatment of skin and wound care issues. Evidence-based practice guides focused assessments and management approaches. Emphasis is placed on understanding physiology of the skin and how healing occurs followed by an extensive review of types of skin injuries, their prevention and treatment. Skin injuries studied in this course include: skin tears, moisture associated skin damage, mechanical skin injuries, surgical site wound infections, pressure injuries and wounds of the lower extremity. Efficient utilization of resources that lead to optimal care for the patient and risk reduction with cost containment for the health care system represents the themes of this educational experience. This course is for individual participants. NO Competency testing is involved in this course. NOTE: This course does not fulfill the Traditional Pathway requirement of the Wound, Ostomy, Continence, Nurse Certification Board (WOCNCB®) for eligibility towards certification without the competencies. |

PURPOSE OF ACTIVITY:

The purpose of this Activity is to: 1. Provide educational experiences to prepare the bachelor’s prepared nurse (and beyond) to practice Ostomy Care as a Nurse Specialist at an entry level in all care settings. 2. Provide access to a curriculum delivered by experienced online educators who are also Board Certified as Ostomy Care Nurse Specialists. 3. Increase the number of Ostomy Care Nurse Specialists providing specialty care across the health care settings. 4. Provide patients with evidence-based ostomy care. |
COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course focuses on the care of the client across the lifespan who has an ostomy or continent diversion. Specifically, the learner will gain knowledge of the diseases or conditions that may result in an ostomy or continent diversion, assessment and perioperative management of these patients. Emphasis is placed on complications of the stoma and skin, risk assessment, prevention, identification and management. Best practice is frequently the level of research in this field of study. That knowledge will be presented in order to improve the nurse’s knowledge and client outcomes. |
